Many organisations use staff training to increase the knowledge base of their staff. But how can you measure the effectiveness of your training?
One of the most common ways to measure learning is in end of module or end of course assessments. These may be question and written answer, multiple choice or single choice from a selection of answers.
Question with written answer assessments
This refers to a question being asked and the learner answering in their own words. The advantage to this is that the learner can demonstrate their understanding fully. The disadvantage is that someone needs to spend the time going through it and picking out knowledge gained, and knowledge missed, and then refer back to the learner.
Question with multiple choice answer
This can be set up in an LMS (Learning Management System) and doesn’t require a person to mark the answers. If you are offering multiple choice answers, you would create a selection of answers that are correct and some that are incorrect.
The advantage to this method is that one question can cover a large area of the training and learners can demonstrate their understanding by selecting all the appropriate responses to the question.
Questions with single choice answers
Again, this can be set up in an LMS, and doesn’t require a person to mark the answers. A question is asked, and the learner selects one correct answer from a few that are offered. This is useful for checking that specific facts have been learned and understood.
All learning has the intention of being applied in the workplace, and the best judge of how successful training has been is to assess whether changes have taken place in the way staff work. If these changes can be attributed to the training they have taken, you can be sure your training is effective.
